You're Teaching What?
House Bill 246
Reduce the Noise
After reading House Bill 246, which is essential to have an intelligent and informed conversation. It appears to me that the Bill is an attempt to not exclude any historical figure from history textbooks based on sexual preference or identity. It also requires textbooks to include teaching students about the forceful removal and illegal deportation of Mexican-American US Citizens during the Great Depression.
The "left" wants to focus on deportation, Gay Rights, and awareness. Both of these issues are difficult to discuss without the noise level going off the charts! Hopefully, this blog will help both sides reduce the noise.
The Fear of Some
The moment the Bill was signed, many Christians and Non-Christians went to social media without ever reading the Bill. Which only contributes to the Noise.
The conservative fear is that teachers will go beyond what the Bill requires and attempt to sway our children to accept the lifestyle and choices that we see as sinful an damaging. This most definitely will be the case in some classrooms, but not all. We must not forget that we have godly Christian educators who know how to uphold the law and not undermine the parent's conservative beliefs.
The Hope of Some
"We applaud and thank Gov. Pritzker for approving this law and for his commitment to LGBTQ inclusion. Illinois is on the right side of history with this important, life-saving law," said Victor Salvo, Executive Director of the Legacy Project. "In our work, we know how difficult it can be to break through the redaction of LGBTQ people from humanity's story and the consequences of that redaction on our kids. To deny a child information that could give them hope, that could help them feel less alone, that could help them feel like they mattered–while at the same time condemning them to hearing bigoted slurs in the hallways of their schools–is a cruelty that every feeling adult has a responsibility to stop."
Clearly, The Left hopes that this law will "save lives" & reduce "bigoted slurs." They hope that all people would accept their position or at the very least respect it. Something I have not seen on either side of the proverbial aisle, but that is for another blog. Victor Salvo's hope seems to validate the conservatives' fears.
The Bible has many verses that leave little room for debate on this issue. For instance, 1 Corinthians 6:9,10 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, not adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, not thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Regardless of what man-made laws govern this country or state, they are subordinate to God's commandments. God's position doesn't change with our culture and times. Unfortunately, our ignorance of his word has left many to voice opinions contrary to God's voice (The Bible).
No less caution should be exercised by those who know his word as they are called to love thy neighbor as thy self (Mark 12:31). 1 Corinthians 13 4-7 reminds us that love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
If you're weighing on this topic via Social Media, have you been loving? Has it accurately represented God's position?
The Noise is boring
God made me this way vs. Homosexuality is a choice
Homosexuality is a sin vs. All sin is equal
Boring, Boring, Boring
According to the Bible, the origin of sexual immorality doesn't matter. Once you realize that God calls it a sin, your only response is to repent. Yes, this is true for all sin, greed, drunkenness, idol worship, etc. So the bottom line is that we should never love any sin more than our savior. We should never have a heart that is willing to trade heaven for hell (if that were possible). God's kids are the temple of his Spirit, and God is our treasure and portion forever.
The Noise Doesn't Help
I don't know a single person who left homosexuality because of a social media post. I do know that taking time (3 1/2 hrs) to explain the gospel with a lesbian can and did lead her to leave the lifestyle and pursue a relationship with Jesus. I do know that reducing the noise and listening to a transgender male can cause him to postpone a gender reassignment surgery. Love and truth convict and convince us of our need for The Lord. Regardless of the sin.
There is but one solution for all of our brokenness. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. The longer I know him, the more I understand my need for him.
We must never separate truth and love.
Enjoy God and reduce the noise
